a tiny cosy food/vine bar in the quiet passage du jeu de Boules two minutes from the historical République. the challenges are ultimately the limited space and budget; hence the choice of simple materials and assembly that could be done by non-professionals. the cooking and the seating areas are organized in a way that would allow the most possible connection between the chef and the guests.
against the standardization of dwelling! this project rethinks a typical domestic milieu, a commercialized urban housing unit, where room sizes are predominantly determined more by the logic of sales and marketing datas rather than the dynamics of life. to create more space for flexible usages and for the presence of the space itself, the rigid sense of room making is challenged and the assumed standard dimensions are replaced by more meticulously compact scales.
two hours from bangkok to the east lies a group of industrial estates in chonburi & rayong. this new development targets at the low-income factory workers in the area. however, low-cost buildings do not equal cheap design. the new housing will provide optimized living environs that allows for suitable ventilation, light, and open green spaces, as well as future expansion.
programmed as a mix of residence and cafe, this new annex situates in a compound of five big-family houses with a strongly harmonious visual unity. adding of any new building into this private context can easily lead to a disturbing result of the whole. the goal of this project, therefore, is to preserve the unity while answering to the new demands.
the building is a 9-storied apartment block among the other four identical ones in sukhumvit area. the original buildings are heavily ornate with lousy quasi-classical elements. there is only one residential unit per floor. none with practical planning, and all is dull and dark, due to the close proximity to each block and the wasteful balcony. the idea is to revitalize the life inside.
a small shelter in solitude. the house is located uphill on a range in an off-grid community. the site overlooks the mountain basins below from which the wind blows through upward. the design follows this wind flow and the site’s limitation which entails absolute simplicity in programming, design and construction.
